Katja Labonté (verified owner) –
3 stars. This was a quick, interesting little Victorian schoolbook about various fish and sea-creatures. Although I’m not sure how up-to-date the information is, I enjoyed the allusions to their own daily experiences, such as the fish they were used to seeing for breakfast, etc. I was less impressed by the very Victorian prejudices, branding octopus as “ugly” and fish like the remora as “lazy”—having grown up on Victorian schoolbooks, I understand how common it is and what it was meant as, but as a child, I would’ve/did totally accepted that, and so handing this book to my own kids I’d start a conversation about the perceived virtues and vices of the fish. I would definitely read more books in this series and I love the pictures that LBP added!
