Description
Gene Stratton Porter’s Freckles is a timeless tale of courage, resilience, and the enduring power of love. Despite facing abandonment as a child, a disability, and poverty, Freckles finds solace and purpose in the heart of the vast Limberlost Swamp. There, he falls in love with a young woman named Angel and immerses himself in the wilderness, guarding valuable timber and encountering a diverse cast of creatures. Porter’s lyrical prose captures the beauty of the natural world and the human spirit’s capacity for growth and transformation.
Join Freckles on this remarkable adventure, a journey of self-discovery, love, and the preservation of the natural world. This is a story that both young and adult readers will treasure, as it reminds us of the wonders of the great outdoors, the importance of conservation, and the strength that can be found within ourselves.

Brittany Roberson –
FRECKLES by Gene Stratton Porter: I have long been a Gene Stratton Porter fan. Laddie and Michael OโHalloran were some of my favorites as a teen. But I never read Freckles!
Until now. And it is so sweet. The majority of the story takes place in the Limberlost, a forest-swampland in Indiana. Frecklesโ job is to guard the timber from poachers, walking the line day after day. Through his diligent and courageous work, he learns to love and be loved by both animals and people, including โAngelโ, the girl he adores above all else.
There is an implication that Freckles must come from good parents because he himself is good and gentlemanly, even though he has no remembrance of his parents. I found this so interesting because I believe it was a common viewpoint at the time of Geneโs writing! Charlotte Mason gurus help me here, but isnโt this exactly why Charlotte Mason wrote the principle children โare not born good or bad, but with possibilities for good and for evilโ?
Highly recommend for high schoolers on up!
