Description
Written as a series of deeply personal journal entries, Stepping Heavenward traces the spiritual growth of Katherine, a young woman navigating lifeโs joys, sorrows, and struggles with a longing to draw closer to God. As readers follow her from impetuous girlhood through marriage, motherhood, suffering, and spiritual awakening, theyโre invited into the intimate thoughts of a soul being slowly shaped by grace.
Originally published in the 19th century, this beloved classic offers timeless encouragement for those seeking a life of faith and purpose. In the thoughtful introduction by her husband, Rev. George L. Prentiss, readers gain insight into Elizabeth Prentissโ own character and convictionsโqualities that shine through every page of her heroineโs journey.
Now, over a century later, Stepping Heavenward remains strikingly relevant. Its honest portrayal of spiritual ups and downs, of learning through failure, and of growing in selflessness resonates just as deeply today. Whether read devotionally or as a story of transformation, this book gently inspires readers to press onward, upwardโstepping heavenward.

Blessing @naptimereaders –
This is one of those books I kept thinking about, even when I wasnโt reading it.
Through vulnerable and personal journal entries, it tells the fictional journey of a young woman, Katherine, as she moves through her teenage years, into marriage & motherhood. Beyond an interest in her physical and situational changes, what struck me most deeply was the spiritual growth seen in her life across a span of about 30 years. Hers was a life marked by working out oneโs salvation with fear and trembling and growing in the grace of Jesus. Although sometimes Katherine personally felt like she was regressing in her spiritual walk, the reader on the outside could see a testimony of Godโs faithfulness and gracious patience as she kept seeking Christ.
One of my favorite aspects to the story were the multiple trusted friends Katherine sought advice from and who poured into her such rich biblical counsel. I often felt that their words were meant just for me.
Though Katherineโs life does not turn out to be the idyllic one she dreamed of, it holds a wonder and beauty all its own as she learns to release her own desires to Christ and embrace His will for her life. Through hardships and struggles, she discovers a safety in leaning on the tender mercies of her Savior.
If youโre on the cusp of entering into the phase of marriage & motherhood, or perhaps youโre deep in that sanctifying work and need a spring of encouragement, I highly recommend this book. I think this is a book I will return to often. It has that ease of readability that can be common to fiction, but the treasure trove of wisdom, biblical insights, and spiritual truths filling its pages often made it read like a non-fiction and will make it completely worth your while.
