This book includes a helpful forward explaining to the grown-ups that its theme is โ€œthe particle model of matterโ€ AKA โ€œatomic hypothesis.โ€ The nine chapters explain particles in different ways โ€“ in the air influencing color (Ch. 1-2), creating storms (Ch. 3), and changing temperature (Ch. 8-9); in a vacuum (Ch. 4-5); as sound (Ch. 6); and in water (Ch. 7). Each chapter is a conversation between Penny and her mama, and Penny is doing and asking things as any child might. I needed to pre-read and recalculate from metric to US a few items for Ch. 1 and 3, and there were two terms in Ch. 1 that I had to think about a second to find the appropriate US term (i.e., torch for flashlight, bomb-jumping for cannon-balling). After each chapter, there are details about how to observe or experiment further.

We inserted this book into the last term of AO Year 2, and my children were 8.5 and 7.25 years old in this term. We were able to read each chapter in one setting although a few times, I stopped for narration mid-way. The first couple of chapters, I was part-way in and thinking, โ€œThis is way over their headsโ€ when suddenly one of them would gasp and interrupt with some kind of observation or connection. Throughout the week, topics from this book came up regularly โ€“ a storm, water in a straw, waves on the beach. It has been fantastic for setting a foundation for understanding particles all around us.
