Andrew Langโ€™s retelling is the version I would place in a childโ€™s hands for their first chapter book on King Arthur. Lang, the beloved author behind The Blue Fairy Book and all the colored fairy books, brings that same sensibility to these tales: wonder sits just beneath the surface, and in places the prose reads almost like a fairy tale itself.

This version is steeped in the church language of old England: Pentecost, prayers, vigils, and vows made before God. Faith is woven into the very fabric of knighthood here, and I consider that a gift to young readers. The characters are real; they are noble and flawed both at once, with hurdles to overcome and quests to pursue, and every tale is threaded with mystery, magic, and wonder.

We so often pair King Arthur with our medieval history studies, but I want to commend this book as a work of literature first. It belongs among the great legends and epics our children need to know. At Charlotte Mason Cottage Curriculum, we place this title on Rung 3 of our Literary Ladder, among the legends and epics.
For your young lords and ladies, I hope this tale stirs their hearts for the quest, and that they find in Arthur and his knights companions worth following into many a noble adventure.
